The Pilea plant is not only unique in its appearance. Hailing from Himalyan China, this plant is said to have originally been brought to Europe by a Norweigan missionary. Constantly sprouting “pups” (baby plants) from the soil surrounding its main stalk, the Pilea was propagated and passed along from friend to friend. As such, the plant was rarely sold commercially and, for many years, considered a rarity in many places of the Western world.
