Plant Details & Size

A very resilient and rare plant, with glossy dark green leaves speckled with light or white spots, earning it the nickname "Milky Way." The Aspidistra Elatior, also known as the Cast Iron Plant, is the perfect statement piece for spaces with little to no natural light. It grows slowly, tolerates drought, and is renowned for being an almost immortal houseplant.

  • Approximately 70cm in overall height, from bottom of pot to top leaf
  • Botanical name: Asparagacées
  • Native to Taïwan, Japan
  • Grown in the Netherlands

*Please note that plants are grown naturally and can vary in height ± 10%. If you're looking for a specific height, please reach out and we'd be happy to help.

Is This the Right Plant for You?

Also known as the barroom plant, the Aspidistra Elatior has been a popular houseplant since the Victorian era of the 1800s, thanks to its ability to thrive in dark, drafty rooms. Native to Japan, Taiwan, and the Himalayas, it grows in swampy environments. This "Milky Way" variety is a rare specimen with uniquely patterned foliage.

Watering

Approximately 0.2 to 0.33 liter of water once a week in spring and summer, every 10 days to 2 weeks in fall and winter.

Care Guide

For watering, use room-temperature water from which the chlorine has evaporated. Leave the potting soil to dry out between 2 waterings. Remove decorative moss beforehand to avoid wetting it. Water in 2 times, about 10 minutes apart, to allow the potting mix to absorb the water. If necessary, spray the foliage from time to time to maintain an acceptable level of humidity. Clean the foliage once a month with a soft cloth and diluted black soap. Rotate the pot a quarter of a circle at this time to promote harmonious growth. Apply suitable fertilizer once a month from March to September.
